CRANE BEING ASSEMBLED ON WATERFRONT LOT

February 23, 2007

Taking the doggy for a walk this morning I noticed a large crane being assembled on the Waterfront Towers lot. Large enough that it took 3 Semi Trucks to unload it. My guess is, is either this is for the Mizpah demo, or perhaps the Waterfront Project is actually beginning. This is much bigger than the cranes used to demo the burnt out section of the Mizpah days after the fire, and I am not sure why they wouldn’t use the empty lot north of the Mizpah to assemble a crane. I’ll be taking another walk down there this afternoon to see if the crane will be moved over the Mizpah property or what.

RESIDENTS OF HISTORIC WELLS AVE AREA FORM DRAFT MASTER PLAN

    February 17, 2007

It was months of hard work on all our parts who live in this area, and here it is! Our plan for the neighborhood. I am more impressed with this plan than the usual Master Plan, even the Downtown Regional Center Plan. Rather than listing generic common-sense goals, the planners really honed in on our neighborhood, addressing all the specific problems we wanted addressed. nice!

Pioneer Parking lot ‘temporary’ barren pavement for 5 years

      February 17, 2007

This requires more than the usual essential meeting post, because it’s so completely asinine. This is for the Pioneer lot, currently fenced off and dirt. My beef with it? First, I don’t consider 5 years to be ‘temporary’. And because THEY consider 5 years ‘temporary’, they want to exclude (not include) provisions for 1) perimeter and interior parking lot landscaping; 2) streetscape standards including: a) tinted sidewalk; b) candy cane street lights; c) tree grates; d) terra cotta styled trash receptacles and planters; and e) cast iron benches; 3) a six foot wall and associated parking lot screening. So in other words, for five years we’ll be looking at a paved parking lot with no landscaping, no decorative lighting, and no pedestrian improvements. Can’t the Planning Commission do better than that?

Ah, so THIS is what it looks when you look out over your penthouse deck on the Palladio. Nice. Thanks to a viewer and soon-to-be resident of the Palladio for emailing us his view.

          REA GETS THE AX

          February 15, 2007

Real Estate Associates ended the deal with The City for the former Mapes lot downtown. It was to construct a building with restaurants and storage space for ice rink equipment on the riverfront property. However, escalting design and construction costs and multiple revisions without any real progress frustrated council members so now it’s a clean slate, they will probably seek proposals from new developers.
